Improv for Empathetic Communication

In this session, we’ll explore the building blocks of empathy and soft skills of communication while utilizing the techniques of improvisation. By walking through a series of exercises, you’ll also learn the importance of active listening, acceptance and collaboration, as well as examine elements of emotional intelligence, while optimizing the skills and behaviors of empathetic communication.

Samantha Bowling, CPA, CGMA is partner at Garbelman Winslow CPAs, an established CPA firm in Maryland, where she leads the initiative for embracing technology and innovation in all areas of business services and internal processes. She is past-chair of the Maryland Association of Certified Public Accountants (MACPA) and was nominated as a “Most Powerful Women in Accounting” by the AICPA and CPA Practice Advisor in 2019. In addition, Bowling is founder and chair of the MACPA’s task force for equality, diversity and inclusion, as well as co-founder and a mentor for the MACPA’s mentoring program.

Elizabeth Byland, professor and director of Applied Health Improv, Virginia Commonwealth University | founder, Comedy Connects |co-founder, Queen City Comedy | professional film and television actor Elizabeth Byland is the professor and director of Applied Health Improv at Virginia Commonwealth University, founder of Comedy Connects and co-founder of Queen City Comedy, as well as a professional film and television actor. She provides a unique opportunity for those of all backgrounds to learn, grow, play and express themselves creatively in a safe and positive environment, while utilizing the techniques of improvisation. In addition, Byland brings her joyful energy, along with 12 years of teaching experience, 17 years of performance experience and a mission to help others reconnect and say "YES" to life. Whether it's helping your business cultivate leadership, followership or effective communication skills, Byland will provide you with an experiential learning opportunity that is both meaningful and fun.

Laura Otting

Laura Gassner Otting is the founder and chief catalyzing officer at Limitless Possibility where she collaborates with change agents, entrepreneurs, investors, leaders and donors to push past the doubt and indecision that consign great ideas to limbo.
