White House and House Democrats Renew Relief Discussions
U.S. Treasury Secretary, Steven Mnuchin, and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi renewed talks this week to discuss another round of federal relief. The $2.2 trillion bill from the House democrats is a scaled-back version of the $3.2 trillion HEROES Act passed by the House in May.

Secretary Mnuchin and Speaker Pelosi met Wednesday afternoon to discuss both the new House bill and the proposal from the White House, which is believed to have a $1.5 trillion price tag. As was the case before, both parties are at odds on additional relief for state and local governments, as well as liability protections for businesses welcoming back employees.

Whether the Senate will agree to the legislation remains to be seen, but as we inch closer to the elections on November 3, the window to reach a deal is rapidly closing.
Massachusetts Registered Voters May Request a Ballot Online
Last week, Massachusetts Secretary of State William Galvin launched mailmyballotma.com in an effort to streamline ballot applications and provide a more efficient process for local town and city election officials to mail general election ballots to all registered voters requesting a ballot.

The Secretary of State’s Elections Division recommends that those planning to vote by mail for the November 3 general election to apply for a ballot no later than October 20.

Economic Roundtable on Fiscal State of Massachusetts (10/7)
Senator Michael Rodrigues and Representative Aaron Michlewitz, co-chairs of the Joint Committee on Ways and Means, and Michael Heffernan, secretary of the Executive Office for Administration and Finance, have scheduled an October 7 economic roundtable to discuss the current fiscal state of Massachusetts, how to best move forward in FY21 and plan for FY22.

It is believed that Massachusetts faces a $5 - $6 billion revenue shortfall over the next year, although one recent report suggested that financial gap could be closer to $1.6 billion.

The FY21 budget is expected to be announced in mid-October, following the reports presented at the October 7 roundtable. We will update you once we know more.

Remote access to the roundtable will be posted here as we get closer to the date.
